A few weeks ago, Kris and I made an afternoon visit to the Reading & Northern at Tamaqua, Pa., on our way to catch 4-8-4 steam locomotive 2102 on its return run from Jim Thorpe to Reading.

Among the locomotives at the north end of the yard was R&N SD40-2 1776 and a former Pennsylvania Railroad caboose, patriotically adorned for America’s 250th anniversary.

This was a lucky find, and I made a variety of photos of the colorful equipment before we continued toward Nesquehoning to intercept the famous 4-8-4 on the move.
