The Mogul or the wheat?

On a sultry Saturday, Kris and I drove to Esbenshade Road to catch up with our friend Doug Scott, who was on his way north.

The return of a mid-afternoon excursion was due shortly, and we could hear Strasburg Railroad’s 2-6-0 Mogul No. 89 working west.

I was impressed by the field of wheat alongside the line and set up a photograph to feature this classic crop with the passing locomotive. I have no shortage of photos of the Mogul, so I was more interested in emphasizing the wheat, with the engine in the distance.

I exposed this series of images using my Nikon Z6 with a 24–70mm lens, then converted the NEF RAW files to DNG format using DxO PureRAW 5 with DeepPRIME corrections before importing the DNG files into Lightroom to make minor cosmetic adjustments, improving contrast and enhancing the texture of the grain.

Green Grass at Cherry Hill & Old 89 under steam.

At the end of March, having completed much travel, Kris and I paid a short visit to Pennsylvania’s Strasburg Rail Road. There we caught former Canadian National 2-6-0 number 89 leading an afternoon excursion on its return from Leaman Place.

I made these views using my Nikon Z7-II with 70-200mm lens.

It was nice to see the green grass growing in the fields!

M&H Bridge Inspection Report

Wayne Duffett of TEC Associates included my 2007 photo of Middletown & Hummelstown 2-6-0 number 91 crossing Swatara Creek on the cover of the railroad’s 2023 Bridge Inspection Report. Wayne dedicated the report to the memory of railroad’s Wendell Dillinger who passed away in late 2023.

I made the photo on a visit to the M&H with railroad historian Kurt Bell. At the time I was researching for my book Railroads of Pennsylvania, published in 2008 by Voyageur Press.

I exposed the original image on Fujichrome slide film using my Canon EOS-3 with a 28mm lens. It was windless on the morning of September 27, 2007, allowing for a mirror-like surface of the Swatara.
