Leica M2 in hand, I made this pacing view while racing along with a westward Delaware & Hudson freight in New York’s Canisteo Valley on April 16, 1989.
New York, Susquehanna & Western—Susquehanna for short—had been appointed the designated operator of the D&H after Guilford ceased operating the line in June 1988.
For a couple of years, NYS&W locomotives were common on D&H freights such as this ABBU (Albany to Buffalo), which was running via trackage rights over Conrail’s former Erie Railroad main line.
Tributary Fun Fact: Although I was many miles from the Susquehanna River, the Canisteo River is a tributary of the Chemung, which flows into the Susquehanna.
