In May 1988, I stood on a hill near Bullards Road in Hinsdale, Massachusetts, just west of Washington Summit, to photograph an eastward Conrail freight on the Boston Line.

This group of four loaded coal hoppers caught my attention: one each from B&O, C&O, Western Maryland, and Seaboard System. At the time, it represented the short history of CSX Transportation!

What a concept: freight cars owned by railroads and not covered in third-party paint.
