    By coincidence, I passed through Anniston, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa on 26 December 1978 on the Southern Crescent, in its final weeks of operation by the Southern Railway. Amtrak took over from 1 February 1979. I recall it as still a pretty good quality service, even it in that last period of private ownership.

    Hard to believe that 40 years have passed since that memorable trip.
