Twin Cities & Western at Hoffman Avenue

On January 13, 1994, I braved frigid temperatures at Hoffman Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota to photograph the eastward Twin Cities & Western freight on Kodachrome.

In the distance is a former Milwaukee Road diesel stenciled for Soo Line.

Exposed on Kodachrome 25 using a Nikon F3T with Nikkor f4.0 200mm lens.

Snow and Ice (and more snow)

Winter in the White Mountains.

Yesterday afternoon (February 17, 2021) I made this photo Conway Scenic Railroad GP9 1751 at the Golf Course Crossing near our North Conway Station.

Over the last few weeks winter weather has made for a textured monochromatic landscape.

Exposed using my FujiFIlm XT-1 with the ‘Velvia’ color profile.

Stark

It is a cool, and aptly named northern New Hampshire village.

Stark. Literally and figuratively. And when I say cool, I’m being ironic.

It was cold.

The old Grand Trunk Railway runs through Stark on the north side of the Ammonmoosuc. Today, this is Genesee & Wyoming’s St. Lawrence & Atlantic.

Trains, when these pass, typically pass in the wee hours.

Very wee.

There’s also an auld bridge here. And a wee church.

A feeling of minimalistic surrealism permeates the frosty landscape.

I made these views on a Stark visit with Kris Sabbatino over the weekend.

All images were exposed using my Nikon Z6, and processed in Adobe Lightroom.

Charlemont in the Snow!

Guilford GP40 353 was leading an eastward at Charlemont, Massachusetts in this December 2000 photograph.

I exposed this image on Fujichrome using a Nikon with 180mm Nikkor prime telephoto.

Diffused winter sun made for soft colors.

Plowing Snow with my Video Studio!

Shortly after arriving on the property at New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad last Spring, I asked owner David Swirk why he had an air-conditioner on his vintage Russel snow plow.

He laughed and said the plow was employed for various tasks. Later in the summer, my video editing studio was temporarily relocated to the plow, where I learned first hand of the importance of the air-conditioner!

Last week in preparation for commencement of February operations, Swirk decided it was time to send the Russel plow out to clear the line and widen the swath of snow made during previous plowing efforts using GP7 573.

So on Thursday, February 13, 2020 the plow was readied and dispatched by Train Order as a Work Extra 573 from North Conway Yard to Attitash pushed in traditional fashion by 573.

I hiked into the Whitaker Woods to document the plow at work, then followed along by road. Here are few of my photos.

Passing under Highway 302 near Bartlett, New Hampshire.

I also made a video, which I posted on Conway Scenic’s Facebook page:

This also appears on the railroad’s Instagram page.
