Photography: room for subtlety?

I made this view of disused narrow-gauge industrial tracks imbedded between the cobbles on Rainsford Street near Dublin’s Guinness Brewery to demonstrate the effects of shallow depth of field.

Exposed on Kodak Tri-X using my battle-worn Nikon F3 with Nikkor 50mm f1.4 lens.

  1. I position the camera at rail level: My Nikon F3T has a removable prism that allows me to look down into the viewfinder from above. I can get similar control using a Rolleiflex with a viewfinder that looks down into the camera, or with my FujiFilm XT1 that has an adjustable external rear display.

How do you position yourself at rail level on a wet day?
