The BIG CHASE: Pan American Southern’s EDRJ, November 2013.
In yesterday’s post, I waxed nostalgic about the old Boston & Maine, illustrating it with images made around East Deerfield on November 21, 2013.
One of the highlights of the day was midday westbound freight, train symbol EDRJ (East Deerfield to Rotterdam Junction) that departed the yard on the Hoosac Tunnel route.
One of my favorite railway activities in the 1980s was a good westward chase on the old B&M. Nothing made this better than a good consist of locomotives. Last Wednesday was like stepping back 30 years. (Sort of).
As we’d say, ‘To the River’ (meaning ‘to the Hudson’).
Although we only got as far as the Vermont-New York state line before the light faded, the spirit of the chase (and chases from year’s gone by) was with us.
Tracking the Light posts new material every morning.
Please spread the word and share Tracking the Light with anyone who may enjoy seeing it!

Thanks Bill!
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Cheers,

Thanks for sharing your chase Brian. Sue & I certainly enjoyed your ride down Memory Lane. Tracking the Light for sure – Sue & I were talking earlier today about the low sun angle spotlighting various things of interest (old rights-of-way for example) this time of year. Earlier this year I took my own revisit to the line ED to M’ville for the first time in several years but just met the eastbound NS intermodal freight around Zoar – no westbound to chase.
Hope you and your folks had a nice Thanksgiving!
It appears that this railroad is practicing arboriculture in their hopper cars!
I have a photo at the same Charlemont spot (along the road) taken last Spring from the rear of the Caritas enroute to the Hoosac Tunnel on the fantrip.
Lose the “American.” It’s simply Pan Am Railways, or Pan Am Southern if west of the Willows. Nice chase. I envy you living in western Mass… the Seacoast is relatively dull-ass in comparison. There’s so much more you can do, close to home.
