Today\u2019s (December 17, 2014) views from Amtrak\u2019s Vermonter en route from Philadelphia to Amherst, Massachusetts. Posted live<\/em> from the train!<\/p>\n

I write from the relative comfort of an Amfleet coach on Amtrak number 56, the Vermonter<\/em>. Below are some views exposed today with my Lumix LX7.<\/p>\n

I thought I\u2019d take the opportunity to use the Amherst Station while I still can.<\/p>\n

Amtrak is due to shift the Vermonter<\/em> to the \u2018Knowledge Corridor\u2019 route at the end of this month. This will result in a restoration of Amtrak service to the former Boston & Maine Connecticut River Line, and the first regularly scheduled passenger trains on the line since Amtrak suspended its Montrealer<\/em> north of Springfield in the mid-1980s<\/p>\n

In July 1989, Amtrak\u2019s Washington D.C,- Montreal Montrealer<\/em> was restored using a Central Vermont (CV) routing via New London, Palmer and Amherst.<\/p>\n

Then, beginning in early 1995, shortly after New England Central assumed operations of the old CV, the daytime Vermonter<\/em> (DC-St. Albans) replaced the nocturnal Montrealer<\/em> schedule. <\/em><\/p>\n

However, this new train used a revised routing via Hartford, Springfield and over the former Boston & Albany to Palmer, then up New England Central\u2019s former CV line to East Northfield.<\/p>\n

Soon Palmer to East Northfield will be freight only!<\/p>\n
