{"id":8667,"date":"2014-10-22T02:49:01","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T06:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/briansolomon.com\/trackingthelight\/?p=8667"},"modified":"2014-10-22T07:55:40","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T11:55:40","slug":"hoosac-tunnel-march-4-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/briansolomon.com\/trackingthelight\/hoosac-tunnel-march-4-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoosac Tunnel March 4, 2007."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>An Eastward Pan Am Railways Freight at East Portal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was working on my book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/North-American-Railroad-Bridges-Solomon\/dp\/0760325278\" target=\"_blank\">North American Railroad Bridges<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voyageurpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Voyageur Press<\/a> and I\u2019d been communicating via E-mail with the late William D. Middleton regarding the particulars of certain spans and photographs of same.<\/p>\n<p>Bill asked a favor of me: He was working on article for TRAINS Magazine and hoped that I could travel to the Hoosac Tunnel to make some contemporary images to help illustrate his article.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, I met Tim Doherty, Pat Yough and Otto Vondrak at East Deerfield for a day\u2019s photography. I needed some images of the former New Haven Railroad Whipple Truss span over the Connecticut River at Montague (now a walking trail).<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day we went west against an eastward freight. I sent the best of the slides to Bill via the US Postal Service. One of my photos, exposed with a wide-angle of the Pan Am Railway\u2019s GP40-2L emerging from the tunnel wearing the experimental light blue and black paint, appeared in Bill\u2019s TRAINS Magazine article.<\/p>\n<p>I prefer this view, moments before the freight exits the inky black depths of Hoosac Mountain.
