Under Clear Western Skies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On the morning of November 11, 2003, John Gruber and I set off from Reno, Nevada and drove up to Union Pacific\u2019s former Western Pacific main line<\/p>\n

Although we weren\u2019t expecting it, we caught this BNSF westward freight near Reno Junction and followed it for many miles.<\/p>\n

\"Western<\/a>
Western Pacific was built by virtue of improved bridge design. Steel tower-supported viaducts, such as this one, allowed for relatively inexpensive construction of very large and tall spans. More than a century later the bridge remains in service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I opted for this view of the famous Clio Viaduct west of Portola, California, where 11 years earlier, I\u2019d exposed a Kodachrome slide of Union Pacific\u2019s Challenger from nearly the same angle.<\/p>\n

For this photograph I use my Nikon F3T and Fujichrome slide film.<\/p>\n

Personally, I like the bit of glint reflecting off the second locomotive.<\/p>\n
