As a westward freight approached Cassandra, Pa., a wayward cloud covered the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Kodachrome this was always a disappointing moment, but for digital photography it is not a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the train grew close, I took a broadside position and began a sweeping panning motion with Nikon Z7-II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the shutter speed was set at 1\/125th of a second, this allowed for sufficient background motion to produce a convincing pan photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keys to a good pan are; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. 1) pick a point on the locomotive that you would like to remain sharp and keeping that point in the same place in the view finder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. 2) Using a full body sweeping pan motion that is parallel to the subject.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. 3) Releasing the shutter without slowing or stopping the sweeping motion; follow through and keep panning after the shutter has released.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
