Here\u2019s a visually challenging situation: a semi-gloss black locomotive with yellow lettering cross-lit by the afternoon sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Cross-lit\u2019: when a train has the front lit by the primary light source (in this case the sun) while the side of the train remains on the \u2018dark side\u2019 (that opposite from the primary light source).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In certain situations cross lighting can be used for dramatic effect; in others it may be viewed as unfortunate or non-conventional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Pampilhosa, I found cross-lighting was a good way to show the scenery, the empty freight train, and the effects of overhead catenary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But does this photo work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
