I avoid shrouding my work in mystery and I’ve happily discussed my technique, tools and materials with anyone who asks. This can lead to some interesting conversations, but also some peculiar observations.<\/p>\n

Over the years, various people have offered \u00a0curious comments on my photography (not including the written comments that appear in response to Tracking the Light). Below are some of the most memorable:<\/p>\n

1) Commenter<\/em>, \u201cI like your slides, what sort of film do you use to make the photos?\u201d<\/p>\n

Me, <\/em>\u201cKodachrome 25\u201d.<\/p>\n

Commenter, <\/em>\u201cKodachrome 25! Isn\u2019t that too slow?!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cThat\u2019s a beautiful scene but I didn\u2019t think it would make a good photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cHere\u2019s a tip for you son, your photos are too head on, I couldn\u2019t read the words on the side of the trains.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cI like your photo of the sunset, if I want to make a photo like that, which filter should I use?\u201d<\/p>\n

Me, <\/em>\u201cI don\u2019t know, I didn\u2019t use a filter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commenter, <\/em>\u201cYes, but if I was to used a filter, which one should I use?\u201d<\/p>\n

5) Commenter (via a 3rd<\/sup> party), <\/em>\u201cI don\u2019t like Brian Solomon\u2019s photography, it shows too many trees!\u201d<\/p>\n

6) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be making photos at night, it\u2019s a waste of film!\u201d<\/p>\n

7) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cYou still<\/em><\/span> use film?!!\u201d<\/p>\n

8) Commenter, <\/em>\u201cSo how are you adjusting from the transition to digital?\u201d<\/p>\n

Me, <\/em>\u201cI still haven\u2019t adjusted from the transition to color.\u201d<\/p>\n

9) Commenter in regards to my Lumix LX3, <\/em>\u201cI can\u2019t believe that YOU <\/em>use THAT!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

10) Commenter in regards to a photo of Amtrak\u2019s Lake Shore Limited in the Berkshires, <\/em>\u201cThat\u2019s a beautiful photograph, pity about the train.\u201d<\/p>\n
