Eastward Delaware & Hudson freight led by Norfolk Southern GE C30-7s passes the semaphore near milepost 314 at West Cameron, New York on September 7, 1987. Today, Norfolk Southern owns and operates this portion of the former Erie mainline, but in 1987 its locomotives were simply operating as run through power on a D&H freight using trackage rights over Conrail. D&H acquired trackage rights in April 1976 as a condition of the creation of Conrail. The challenge of this location was in trying to get the image level. Complicating matters was the windswept tree at the left, the banked curve forcing the train to lean to the right, and the vertical cant on both the semaphore and grade crossing signal. Photo made with Rollei model T; scanned full frame using an Epson V500 flatbed scanner.
